Black dotwork mandala tattoo of a layered flower behind a person's ear, shown from the side with their hair pulled back.

Dotwork mandala behind the ear

Dotwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A layered mandala-style flower sits behind the ear, built from stacked petals and a small central rosette. The design is made from fine linework and dense stippled dotwork shading that gives the petals depth. It is rendered in black and grey ink, and the tattoo fills the upper side of the frame against the dark hair.

The ovens were already ticking when I came through the back door, and Mrs Okonedo had left the flour sacks slumped against the wall like tired sentries. Nobody in Hartlepool bought a loaf before seven, but the bakery had sold bread at that hour since 1931, and I was not going to be the one who broke the run.

The trouble that morning was the sunflower-shaped batch. Every Thursday Mr Pryce ordered a special, a round bun pressed with concentric rings of seeds and a dusting of poppy, and every Thursday the rings came out lopsided. I had spent a month with a pastry brush and a steel pin, dotting the surface with the tip of a skewer, one tiny mark after another, trying to make the rings sit evenly. Mrs Okonedo watched me from the corner with her arms folded and said nothing, which was worse than any remark.

At half past five the light came up grey over the bins, and I finally saw it. The rings were not supposed to be perfect. Each seed had to sit a little apart from its neighbour, so the bun looked like it was opening under the warmth of the oven. I scattered the last poppy seeds by hand, quick and careless, and slid the tray in before I could fuss again. When Mr Pryce came in at seven and held the bun up to the window, he laughed out loud and paid double for it.
