Open shell with pearl on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows an open clam shell with a glowing pearl resting inside, outlined in bold black linework. The upper shell is shaded in pink fading to pale rays, while the lower shell is orange with a pink interior, and the pearl is teal and white. The design sits centred on the forearm against plain skin, with a sleeve visible at the top of the frame and a paper towel and plastic sheet behind the arm.

The mule had stopped on the last switchback below Kessel Pass, and you knew before you looked that it was not the weather bothering her. Snow had melted off the limestone in grey tongues, and where the path cut through the scree a slab stood open like a hand. Inside it sat a shell as wide as your palm, its two halves parted, and nested where the flesh should have been was a pearl the colour of a wet morning.

Nobody in Vossen had told you the sea ever came this high. Old Marit at the inn had laughed when you showed her the grey fossil, then gone quiet and set her cup down. "The mountains were a bed once," she said. "Everything that lay down in it is still lying there." You wrapped the shell in your scarf, the pearl knocking against your ribs the whole way down, and it grew no warmer however close you held it.
At the bottom of the pass the wind dropped and the valley opened, and you found the mule had followed you all the way without a rope. Something about that made you stop at the river ford. You unwrapped the stone, held it over the current, and watched the light slide off the pearl as if it were deciding something.
You climbed back the next morning. The slab was still open, the shell still cupped around its one hard secret, and you set the scarf down beside it and did not take it. Below, the mule was already grazing. The first sun touched the rock and the pearl flickered teal, then white, then went out like a lamp someone had remembered to turn off.
