Two cats curled into a heart

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of two cartoon cats, one dark grey and one pale, curled around each other to form a heart outline. The bold black outlines are filled with smooth grey shading that gives the bodies and tails soft volume. The design is centred on pale, lightly freckled skin with a plain, uncluttered background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marjorie Pell had been trusted with the rings and nothing else, which was why she kept one hand on her handbag and the other on the pocket where the rings sat. The churchyard smelled of wet yew and cut grass. Her nephew's two strays had been let in for the photographs, because the bride had said the cats were family, and now Soot sat on top of the lychgate with the dignity of a bishop who had been made to wait.

Soot was the dark one, a grey so deep it looked black until the sun caught the fur along his back. Biscuit was pale as clotted cream and followed him everywhere, which was why, when the couple walked out under the trees, the two of them came too. Biscuit wound his tail round Soot's, then Soot's round his, and they settled on the gravel in a loop that the photographer, a sharp young man called Tomasz, declared the best thing he had seen all year. He didn't even ask them to move.

The bride laughed so hard she had to sit on the low wall. The groom crouched beside the cats and scratched Soot under the chin, and Soot allowed it, which Marjorie had never once seen him permit a human to do. Somewhere a bell started, late, the way the bell always started. Marjorie handed over the rings at the porch, counting them twice, and when she looked back down the path the cats had gone, leaving two small dents in the gravel where they had curled together.
