Watermelon slice on a wrist

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small tattoo of a watermelon slice sits on the inner wrist of a person wearing light denim. The fruit has a pink flesh with black seed marks and a dark green rind outline, drawn with clean, even lines and flat fills. The slice is centred on a plain skin area, with a blurred indoor background behind the arm.

The melons in the back of the truck have been sweating in the heat since Barstow, and the man at the roadside stand is already asking you to name a price for the last one. You say a dollar. He laughs and says the road has taught him better, so you hand over two coins and take the melon anyway.

Out past the stand the highway runs straight as a ruled line, shimmering where the asphalt meets the sky. Your sister sits in the passenger seat with her boots on the dashboard and cuts the melon with the pocketknife she keeps for exactly this. The rind is dark as a bottle, and the flesh inside is the colour of a struck match. She hands you the first wedge without looking, the way she has since you were small enough to be handed things.

You eat with the window down. Seeds spit out in arcs and land in the dust, little black commas you could follow back to the stand if you wanted to. Neither of you mentions the letter in the glovebox, or the reason you left the coast in April, or the phone number on the back of it that you keep meaning to dial from somewhere with a signal.

Halfway through the second wedge she says the melon tastes like the last summer before everything went sideways. You tell her it tastes like cold water from a metal bucket. She laughs, the road runs on ahead of you, and you wipe your hands on your knees and let the truck roll toward a town neither of you has seen.
