Pink blossom on both forearms
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The photograph shows two forearms held palm up, each with a cluster of pink blossom flowers near the wrist. The petals are rendered with soft edges and gradual tonal shifts in pink, giving a watercolour-like finish. The plain grey background keeps the focus on the two matching designs.

Dear Tomas, the wild cherry by the mill race came out on Tuesday, a full week before Father's almanac said it would, and Mrs Ashby has already declared it a judgement on the parish. You know how she is. I walked up past the last cottage with the goat under my arm because Bess wouldn't leave the ditch alone, and the whole edge of Harrow Wood looked as though someone had breathed pink onto it.

I am writing because you asked in your last letter whether anything at home still happens without you. Plenty happens. The bees swarmed in April and Father swore at them for an hour before they settled in the apple crate. Pell's boy fell off the byre roof and only broke his wrist, which he now shows to everybody as if he won it. Nothing changes much, and I think that is why I went up to the trees this morning instead of to the shop.
The blossom lasts about a week before the wind takes it. I stood under the nearest branch and the petals came down so slowly I could count them against the grey sky, pale at the edges and deeper where they had folded. I picked three that had fallen onto the bank and pressed them inside this letter. Mind them when you open it. They will be brittle, and they will not survive the post any better than the trees survive the wind.
Come home at the end of the month if the ship lets you. Not for good, only for a Sunday. Stand under the branch with me and we will see who can catch the most before they reach the water. I always lose. Your loving sister, Ruth.
