Watercolour birds on a wrist
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A hand is shown with the wrist turned towards the camera, bearing a small tattoo of two birds in flight. The birds are filled with a mottled, watercolour-like pattern of blue, purple and pink, with soft, uneven edges. The plain white background keeps the focus on the tattoo and the skin.

The pigment jars were the first things Uncle Teo sold when the mine at Sallow Crossing shut, but he kept the cobalt. He said it was the only honest colour left in the desert. Every Sunday he sat me on an upturned crate outside the petrol station and let me watch him mix it with rose madder and a squeeze of violet from the chemist in Hadley Wells, until the puddle on his palette looked like a bruise going healthy.

The sign he painted that summer had two swallows on it, or swifts, he never agreed which. They hung above the pumps where the road bent east, wings pinned mid-stroke, blue and pink running into each other where the wash had not quite dried. Lorries came through all day with their horns going, and I used to count them from the step, forty-one one Tuesday, and every time the sun came round to the birds they looked more like they were lifting off the board.
In September the rain came sideways for one night, and by morning the swallows had bled down the boards in long grey tears. Teo stood in the forecourt with his hands in his pockets for a long while. Then he went inside and came back with a tin of the cobalt and a brush worn to a point. 'Water-colour takes the weather,' he said. 'It's the only thing that does.' He painted them again, slower, leaving the edges soft so the wind could get in.
A driver in a green cab stopped for diesel and asked me why anyone would paint birds on a petrol station in the middle of nothing. I told him they were going somewhere, and the road was too long to walk. He laughed and drove off east. I watched him go, and the two birds seemed to go with him, a little blurred at the edges, exactly as Teo had left them.
