Orbital ellipses on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows several thin, intersecting elliptical lines looping around a solid white-centred circle, resembling orbital paths. The circle and the area beside it are shaded with fine stippled dots that fade outwards, while the orbits are drawn in crisp single lines. The image is a close, straight-on photograph of the forearm against a pale painted brick wall, with the tattoo placed near the centre of the frame.

The chalk gave out before the third loop was finished, so Nell Ormerod drew the last one in pencil on the back of a gas bill, sitting on the roof hatch with her coat buttoned to the throat. Below, Deansgate was thinning out. A night bus sighed at the lights, and somewhere a shutter came down with the clatter of a dropped tray.

Uncle Tom had kept the orbits in a green ledger, each path drawn in one clean stroke, each one missing its centre. The sun sat at a focus, he'd told her, never in the middle. Nobody sits at the centre of anything. He had said it over the kitchen table the winter the telegraph office closed, and then he had gone out to measure the stars and not come back in until dawn, which was how she knew he was happy.

She climbed onto the parapet with the ledger and a torch wrapped in a scarf to soften it. The lamp on the chimney stack threw its pale disc across the slates. She held the torch steady where its glow met the dark, and the loops she had drawn over forty years, each one tilted a degree off the last, began to find their light. Wet slate shone. The ring of windows across the road turned slowly, as if they had always been moving that way.

When the bus pulled away she folded the gas bill into the ledger and marked the spot where the little dotted shadow faded outward into nothing. Across the street, one window stayed lit on the fourth floor. She didn't know whose it was. She only knew it was not the centre, and that was exactly where it ought to be.
