Orchids and lanterns across a shoulder blade
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows white orchid blooms with pale grey shading, alongside several orange Chinese lantern pods hanging from thin stems. Green leaves and stems sweep diagonally across the upper back and over the shoulder. Soft pink and orange tones blend into the skin with smooth, realistic shading, and the photo is taken from behind, showing only the back of the head.

The boiler at Carrow Hill gave up a little after two, and Ada Pryce went down the glasshouse with a storm lamp, counting the orchids by their smell. Phalaenopsis did not like a frost. Their white flowers went brittle at the edges if the air dropped below the mark on the thermometer, and she had spent thirty years learning to read a bloom the way you read a face.

Her nephew Danny came in from the potting shed with his collar up, carrying a bundle of physalis he had cut for the office window. "They'll only drop their lanterns," he said. "Let them," Ada said. "Orange is the only colour this place has in January." She hung the stems from a nail above the bench, and the papery husks caught the lamplight and glowed like small moons, each with a seed rattling inside whenever the door swung.
Near four she found the one she had been waiting on, a white spike on the third bench that had opened three flowers overnight, the lip of each freckled with rose as if someone had dabbed it with a fine brush. She didn't wake Danny. She sat on an upturned crate with her coat over her knees and watched the frost grow on the outside of the panes in fern-shaped feathers, and the lamp burn lower.
At first light she cracked open a lantern pod, the way her mother had shown her, and tipped out the seed, small and hard as a peppercorn. She pressed it into the damp moss beside the orchid pot. "Nothing grows in a hurry here," she told Danny when he finally came in, yawning. He looked at the bloom, then at the empty husk in her palm, and said nothing, which was the kindest answer she had ever had from him.
