Origami elephant with floral paper pattern

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A folded origami elephant with its trunk raised sits on the inner forearm, filled with teal paper printed with yellow and maroon flowers and paisley-style motifs. Bold outlines define the folds, with soft shading that suggests the creases in the paper. The design is centred on a plain skin background, with the pattern giving the piece its main colour interest.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, sit down, and mind the bucket by your feet, because this one starts with paper and a bad hour. The sheet was the last of the wrapping in Hal Brennan's drawer, teal on one side and printed all over with yellow blooms and maroon petals, the sort of paper a shop used for good teacups. He had meant to fold a crane, the way everyone folds a crane, but it was gone half eleven on a wet Thursday in Leeds, the last bus had left, and the bins steamed in the alley while his fingers kept making the wrong creases.

His gran Ivy had taught him the squash fold and the valley fold when he was small enough to sit on the kitchen table. She used to say an elephant was just a crane that had eaten too much. So he folded a fat body from the middle of the sheet, pulled a long trunk up from the front, tucked the ears back with his thumbnail, and set the thing on the windowsill under the streetlamp. The flowers caught the orange light and looked, for a moment, like they were opening.

Across the road a woman in a council tabard was sweeping glass from the pub steps. She looked up at the sill, then down at her broom, then back at the sill, and laughed the way people do when they have been awake too long. In the morning the elephant was gone from the window. In its place sat a small crane on the bench outside the bus shelter, its folded neck bent towards the sky, and tucked under one wing was a note in careful biro that read, Trunk's a bit long, but I'd keep it.
