Ornamental bulldog design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A standing English bulldog is drawn in profile-facing three-quarter view, with its head turned toward the viewer and its body filled with dense, ornamental patterns. The linework combines fine hatching, dotwork stippling and repeated geometric shapes such as scales, diamonds and studded bands, with shading on the face and muscles to give volume. The image is entirely black ink and grey on a plain white background, centred and complete.

The lorry idled behind a man in a flat cap who had been arguing with the barrier for ten minutes, and you were the one sent out to look at the dog. It sat in the middle of the white line as if someone had issued it a permit. Its face was all folds and temper, and the ink across its shoulders looked like armour buffed by somebody with more patience than sense.

Its owner, Ilse Varga, said the dog was called Duke and had crossed forty times. Her own papers were fine. Duke's booklet was not, because the vet's stamp had smudged over the last digit of the year. You asked her to walk him through. She said he did not walk, he considered. Behind you the queue began to honk in the weary way of people who have been lied to by machines before.
You fetched a biscuit from the drawer you were not supposed to have. Duke's nose twitched, but his eyes stayed on you with the expression of a magistrate. You crouched the way your father crouched beside a nervous horse, and read the diamonds and studded bands on his flank as though they were a map of every border he had ever refused to cross without a fight.
You stamped the booklet yourself, with the year you could see, and wrote a note in the margin for the sergeant to find on Monday. Duke rose, shook his whole patterned body like a wet rug, and trotted through the gate without a glance back. Ilse laughed. You waved the lorry on, and the dog's shadow lay across the white line, looking, for once, as though it had been given leave.
