Lotus flower tattoo on a foot

Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot rests on white bedding, showing a lotus flower tattoo on the top side near the ankle. The lotus has layered petals outlined in black with grey shading, and a curling stem with small dots trails below it. The tattoo is in black and grey against the pale skin, and the foot fills the centre of the frame with soft white fabric around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Esplanade Ballroom had a floor that sprang when the band hit the third bar, and on Thursdays Mr Okonedo swept it with a broom he called his partner. I ran the cloakroom behind the staircase, where coats came off and lost gloves piled up in a biscuit tin nobody had opened since the war.

The girl who came in that October checked a pale blue umbrella with a brass tip and never once went onto the floor. When she came back for it she asked whether anyone ever left flowers behind. I said only gloves, and she laughed a short laugh and told me about a pond at the bottom of her grandmother's garden, where the lotus opened at first light and folded shut by noon. You had to be up early, she said, or you missed the whole performance.

The next Thursday she brought a sheet of tracing paper folded in four. She unfolded it on my counter. A lotus, its petals layered like the pages of a book, sat over a curl of stem with a scatter of small dots trailing beneath. Those are the seeds, she said, they fall out when the flower goes over. I asked why she was showing me a drawing of a flower in a ballroom cloakroom, and she only smiled and said she was going north on the Monday train.

After she left I took the umbrella down from its hook and found a pressed petal tucked inside the fold, grey at the edges and still faintly pink in the middle. I wrote a new ticket in pencil, the way you do when you mean to keep something for someone, and hung the umbrella back where the light from the stairs would catch the brass.
