Large realistic grey elephant head tattoo across a person's upper back, with a trunk formed of vertebrae and muted brown tusks.

Elephant head with vertebrae trunk across back

Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo

A large elephant head fills most of the upper back, seen from the front with both ears spread outwards. The face and ears use fine shading and stippled dotwork for texture, while the trunk is built from segmented vertebrae with dark spaces between them. The tusks and ears carry muted brown and mauve tones over the grey and black shading.

Sit nearer, the wind up here has teeth and it likes the young ones best. You want the elephant story, so listen. When the old Margrave of Hollin's Crag wanted a thing no other lord in the valley owned, he sent his steward south with a purse of silver and a letter nobody could read. The steward came back in the autumn with a grey beast that had walked every pass in the mountains, and the ferrymen at Orrin's Bend swore it never once lay down. They housed it in the chapel where the roof had fallen in, and it ate nothing the cooks carried up. It ate stone.

Each night it lifted a flagstone from the cloister with its trunk, and each morning the walls stood a rib shorter. Beneath the nettles the steward found the Margrave's hounds, buried by generations and laid out in order, their bones knuckled and pale as candle wax. The beast had been counting them, he said, the way a clerk counts debts. Nobody believed him until the night the Margrave himself climbed up with a lamp to see for his own eyes.

He found the elephant standing over the family vault with its trunk raised high, and the trunk was no longer flesh but a long chain of vertebrae, every joint dark as a doorway. It turned one great ear towards him and waited, patient as a judge. The Margrave understood then that the hounds had never been the debt. Slowly he set the lamp down on the cold stone, and with his own two hands he began to lift the lid.
