Red rose tattoo on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a forearm with a traditional-style tattoo of a red rose with dark green leaves. The rose has bold black outlines, with flat red fills and some darker shading on the petals. The rose gold watch sits over the wrist, and the tattoo continues beyond the frame.

Dear Marion,

I meant to post this a fortnight ago, but the greenhouse has kept me busy and the reunion has made me restless. You will remember Desmond Kell, who sat behind us in Mrs Pryce's maths and never once finished a sum. He found me at the church hall with a carrier bag held out like a schoolboy caught with stolen apples. Inside, wrapped in the Gazette, was a length of the old climbing rose from the wall by the bike sheds, the one we were all warned never to touch. He had dug it up at four in the morning before the council's men arrived with their hoarding.
He wanted me to take it, since I still have a garden and he has only a flat above the launderette. I said no, and then I said yes, mostly because the roots were already drying and the thorns had gone the colour of old pennies. We planted it against the south wall on Sunday. Desmond stood there in his good coat with mud to the elbows, telling me the leaves were too dark and the stems too stubborn to live, and I kept telling him to hush and hold the stake.
This morning I went out to find a single bloom open, deep red, its petals edged in black as if someone had gone over them with a fine pen. It was the colour of the sealing wax on Mrs Pryce's report cards. I cut it for the kitchen table and thought of you, and of how much we all promised to be different by now. Come up in June. Bring the good secateurs.
Love, Ruth
