Ornate patterned elephant design

Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash

A side-on elephant in profile, with its trunk curled forward, filled from head to legs with dense ornamental patterns. The linework combines fine dotted and curved lines with bold solid black areas and mandala-like floral motifs. The design is rendered in black ink on a plain white background and is centred in the frame.

Mrs Pell, who ran Sandgate House on the front at Margate, had stopped asking Mr Ashdown to come down for tea. He had been upstairs for eleven days with a sheaf of cartridge paper and a bottle of Indian ink, copying an elephant from the lid of a biscuit tin. Each evening the animal grew another flower on its flank, another ring of dots around its ear, until the sheets were pinned along the landing like washing.

On the twelfth night the wind came off the sea hard enough to rattle the sashes, and Ashdown found the elephant had moved. Not far. It stood at the foot of his bed on the blank sheet he had left for the hind legs, trunk curled the way he had drawn it, and somewhere between a lotus and a Catherine wheel it had lost every trace of pencil and gone entirely to black. He sat on the edge of the mattress and did not argue with it.

"Go on, then," he said. The elephant took one step onto the boards, leaving small wet prints that dried to nothing in the lamplight. Downstairs the hall clock struck two. The other lodgers slept on while the pattern climbed the banisters, spread across the hallstand and over the brass barometer, until the whole house was lace and ink and the sea sounded very far away.

Mrs Pell found the finished sheet pinned to the landing at breakfast, the elephant facing the stairs as though it expected someone. In the bottom corner Ashdown had added one more flower and, beside it, a pair of very small footprints heading down towards the shingle.
