Ornamental scrollwork tattoo on a thigh
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A person lies on their side on a light bed, showing a leg with a large black ornamental design that wraps from the hip down towards the knee. The design is made of interlocking curls, swirls and angular shapes with a dense, bold linework. The image is almost entirely in black ink against warm skin tones, with a dark patterned headboard behind.

The master hands you the chisel the morning the lattice must go up. "Follow the curl, not the line," he says, tapping the limestone block where the pattern begins. Around you the courtyard of the Hall of Ilmar smells of wet lime and cedar smoke, and the other masons stop talking to listen to the chisel.

You have drawn the scroll forty times on wax tablets. Each time the tendrils fold back on themselves and meet where they began, and each time the design jams where two leaves must cross. The master never gave you the answer. He only said the wall would show it to you, if you were patient enough to cut around the wrong choices until only the right ones remained.
So you work through the afternoon, tapping lightly, letting the dust run down your wrist. Where the stone is sound you cut deep. Where it cracks you turn the curl aside and let a dark gap open behind it, a hollow the light can pass through. By dusk the wall looks less like a carving and more like something breathing through its own openings, black spaces threaded among the gold.
When the lamps are lit the master walks the courtyard with his hands behind his back and stops at your section. He says nothing for a long time. Then he taps the one place you were least certain of and says, "That is the gap I would have filled." You understand it is praise, and that you will never again look at the wall without seeing the shadows you chose to leave.
