Ornamental swirl on the back of a hand
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of a hand with a small ornamental tattoo on the back, made of a flowing swirl with tapering lines and a few dotted accents. The ink is a muted grey-blue with solid, even linework and light shading. The hand is angled across the frame against a blurred red background, with a white garment at the left edge and a gold ring on one finger.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the lamp, it has a temper like my brother-in-law. Nobody in Scarsby had a boat called the Mercy Lark who didn't know what the Lark owed the sea, and her skipper, a man called Abel Fenwick, owed the sea more than most.

The winter of the long blow, the Lark went out past the Holm with four men and a dog. The swell came up grey and then blue-black, and the wave that took the stern rail rose like a scroll unrolling, curling back on itself in a hiss of spray. Abel said afterwards that the water had a lay to it, the way a good rope does, and that if he looked long enough he could follow it home.
So he did. He stopped reading the sky and read the swell instead, counting the drops that hung off the crest, nine, then eleven, then a knot of seven together like a pinch of salt. Each cluster was a bearing. He steered by them until the Scarsby light came up through the murk, and the dog barked once, which was the only thanks anyone ever heard that creature give.
Abel never went out without a pencil after that, and he drew that wave on the back of every chart he owned. Pass me that tin, lad. There's a drawing inside it, and if you look at the curl of the line you'll see the old way home, still there, waiting for a steady hand.
