Ornamental tattoo on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman in a beige knit jumper rests her hand on her chest, with a black and grey tattoo visible on the forearm below the sleeve. The tattoo shows dark outlines and grey shading forming curved, ornamental shapes. The soft, neutral tones of the knitwear and the blurred background keep the focus on the tattoo and hand.

Tomas had been scrubbing the same copper pan since the Shetland light slid behind them, and the swell had not let up once. The galley of the Margaret Lowe smelled of burnt onion and wet oilskins. Cook Ada Rennie wedged herself between the range and the bulkhead and pressed a fist into the dough she had been working since four.

She was making bread for the morning watch, but the dough kept springing back. Tomas watched her fold it, turn it, fold it again, and the bubbles under the skin rose in a curl along the surface like the top of a wave going over. "You're working it too tight," he said. "It wants room to breathe." She didn't look up. "It wants a bloody oven, same as me."

At the second bell the ship lurched hard and a tray of tin mugs slid off the bench. Tomas caught two and lost the rest, and Ada barked a laugh that sounded more like a cough. She had sailed thirty years and never once burned a loaf she hadn't meant to. She rolled the dough into a long coil, then wound it inward into a spiral the way her mother had on the Orkney quay, tucked the end under, and slid it onto the tray.

When the bread came out, the crust had split along the spiral in a pale ring, open like a fern in May. Tomas carried the tray up the companionway with both hands, careful as a man carrying a sleeping child. Ada stayed by the range, wiping her palms on her apron, and listened to the sea knock against the hull as if it wanted to be let in for its share.
