Tiny crescent moon on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small solid black crescent moon sits on the side of a finger, close to the knuckle. The linework is fine and neat, with a little shading along the curve of the moon. The hand is raised towards the face against a soft, blurred background in neutral tones.

Dear Nell, your mother says I am to stop fussing about the moon, and I have promised her I will, but you know I can't leave a thing alone once it has a shape in my head. So here is the rest of it, written at the kitchen table while the kettle goes cold beside me.

Your grandfather Walter was a clockmaker's apprentice before he was anything else, and he never once threw away a scrap of metal. The silver crescent on my finger came from the handle of a teaspoon he'd been given at his christening. He sat up three nights with a jeweller's file and a jar of pickle to hold the work steady, and the shavings collected in a saucer by the sugar bowl like little curls of new moon. When I asked why a moon, he only said the sky had been good to us and he wanted a sign of it he could carry.

He proposed on the sea wall at Whitby with the moon thin and low over the harbour, and he told me later that he had chosen the night on purpose. A waning moon, he said, is the sky giving back what it borrowed. I thought that was the most ridiculous thing I'd ever heard. I laughed so hard I nearly dropped the ring in the sea. He never did finish the matching band he'd promised me, and I never asked him to.

So when you walk up the aisle on Saturday, put a pinch of those saved shavings in your glove, the way I did for my own wedding. Nobody will see them. You will know they are there, and that is enough of a moon for anyone. Love, Gran.
