Small crescent moon on an upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small crescent moon is tattooed on the inner upper arm, drawn in thin black linework with no shading. The arm rests extended across a cream textured blanket, with a gold wristwatch and a mint green skirt in the lower part of the frame. The soft natural light and plain background keep the focus on the small tattoo.

Dear Ruth,

The moon is still up when I unlock the back door of Halloran's, so I stand on the step for a minute with the flour sacks and watch it hang over the gasworks like a paring somebody forgot to bin. Mr Halloran says the old bakers in Leeds used to chalk a moon above the oven door so the boy on the early shift knew when to pull the first tray. I never believed him until this morning, when the chalk was still there under three coats of white paint and I could just make it out.
I have the rye starter going in the cold corner now. You would hate how I talk to it. Last Tuesday it sulked for hours until I gave it a rest and a sniff of the bread knife, which is apparently what it needed. Mr Halloran laughed so hard he had to sit on the proving drawer.
The thing I wanted to tell you is that the crescent on the board above the ovens has started to lift in the heat. Every morning I think it will peel off altogether, and then it doesn't. I have decided it is waiting for someone to finish the sentence.
By the time you read this the light will have come over the gasworks and the moon will be gone, and I will have sold forty loaves of plain white to people who have never noticed the chalk. Write back. Tell me whether the sea in Whitby is as cold as you promised.
Love, Nell
