Ornamental wolf head on a lower leg
Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A gloved hand wipes a fresh black and grey tattoo of a wolf head on the lower leg. The design uses fine linework and dense ornamental patterns, with a mandala-like arrangement of circles and geometric detail around the eye and muzzle. The tattoo is covered in a clear film and ointment, and the bare skin and white paper underlay sit around it.

The wolf had been cut into the chapel lintel long before anyone in Hartsgill thought to ask why it faced the pit head rather than the altar. Nell Garside touched its ringed eye with her thumb each morning on her way to the lamp room, the way her father had, and each morning the carved circles seemed a little more worn, as if the stone were being rubbed from the inside.

The new manager wanted the lintel taken down and sold for the coal company's offices in Durham. He said the wolf was superstition and the galleries were dry now that the big pump had been running for two winters. Nell didn't argue. She went home instead and opened her father's notebook, where he had drawn the wolf over and over, each time a little more finely, circles folding into circles until the muzzle became a map. She counted the rings and found they matched the old galleries, the ones sealed after the roof fall in '31.
That night the cage stuck halfway down the shaft and somewhere below her the water began to talk, a low knocking like a fist on a door. Nell took the notebook, a hand lamp and a bag of chalk, and went down the ladder herself. In the sealed seam she laid the drawing against the wet rock and followed the pattern with the chalk, ring by ring, until the last line met the muzzle.
When she tapped the stone at the wolf's eye, the knocking stopped. In the quiet she heard a second sound, a dry scrape, and then the lamp showed her a passage that had not been there before, running straight out toward the light the men still called the good way home.
