Realism portrait with tiger on a calf
Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A large realism-style tattoo of a woman with white hair or headdress, eyes closed, shows fine shading across the face and skin tones. A tiger's head and fur are rendered in browns and greys beside her, with ornamental details and touches of pink, red and green. The tattooist's gloved hands are working on the piece, and the image is framed diagonally across the leg with another floral tattoo visible on the upper arm at the top.

The tiger has been waiting on the loading bay of the Lantern Street bazaar since midnight, its amber eyes fixed on the bolted shutter of Madam Oyelaran's silk stall, and you know it isn't there for the fish heads. You have worked the back door for nine winters. You have never once seen it blink.

Inside, the sleeping woman lies on a bed of folded saris, her white headdress pinned with dull brass and a single red bead, the strings of it running down to the floor like rain. Nobody in the district has seen her eyes open. The old stories say she was a dancer who lay down in the rain outside the mill and never got up, and that the tiger came down from the hills to keep watch until the city forgot her name.
You kneel by the shutter and count the rustling of the gutters. Your hand, which has never been steady, is steady now. The tiger turns its head, slow as a tram swinging round the bend at the canal, and lets you pass. The bolts give with a sound like a held breath let go. The cold smell of jasmine and diesel rolls over you.
She is smaller than the painted version on the poster. Her lashes are dark against her cheek, and the pink marks above her brows have faded to the colour of old ribbon. You fold the last silk over her shoulders, and at the window the tiger sighs and lies down across the threshold, a long warm weight, while the first trams start ringing their bells without you.
