Ornate cat face tattoo on a calf

Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A stylised cat face sits at the centre of the composition, framed by dense ornamental patterns resembling mandala work and a small flower at the lower left. The linework is fine and dark, with grey shading that gives the eyes and face depth. The tattoo is in black and grey ink on pale skin, photographed from above on a white paper surface.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Tomasz, the plums came in early this year and the wasps came with them, so I have been sitting under the Victoria tree with the tin of cloves your mother sent, waiting for the cat to earn her keep. You will remember her as the grey one who sulked on the potting bench. She has changed her name to Mrs Pemberton since you left, because the postman calls her that and she answers to anything with a sniff of disdain.

Something else has changed. Last Tuesday I found the old wooden gate from the lower field lying flat in the grass, and on its back someone had carved a face. Not a clumsy face. The cat's eyes were drawn as circles inside circles, and round her ears ran rings of little leaves and notches, the kind of pattern you see on the lids of brass boxes in Mr Ashdown's shop in Leominster. At the foot of it sat a single five-petalled flower, a quince blossom by the look of it. I asked the vicar's boy and he swore on his bicycle it was not him. I believe him. He cannot draw a straight line.

I have decided not to be cross. Someone has taken trouble over a gate nobody uses. I left the cloves on the step with a saucer of milk beside them, and this morning the milk was gone, the wasps were gone too, and Mrs Pemberton sat on the broken hinge looking over the orchard as if she had signed the deed herself. Come at Michaelmas if you can and bring the good secateurs. The gate is propped against the barn, face up, so you can see her when the sun clears the ridge.

Your loving aunt, Ruth
