Ornate balance scales design
Mixed · Flash
A detailed drawing of balance scales with an ornate central column decorated with swirling filigree and interlaced ribbon-like forms. The fine linework and stippled shading give the metal frame texture, and the two pans are tinted gold. The scales sit centred on a pale, misty background with faint stars and soft peach and blue tones.

The scale-maker's daughter minded the balance under the oak at the forest's edge, where the village brought its wool and barley to be weighed. The column was wound with silver ribbons that her father swore were the roots of the first tree, and on still evenings the mist behind the beam filled with a faint peach light, as if someone had lit a lamp far out in the dark.

Silas Dunmore came up the path on a grey Tuesday with a sack of fleece over his shoulder. He set it in the left pan and reached for the right, and Ada saw his thumb slip a sliver of lead under the rim. The gold pan dipped. The wool looked heavier than it was, and Dunmore smiled at her the way men smile at children they think are slow.
Ada said nothing. She watched the stars in the mist behind the frame, and they seemed to slide sideways, the way fish turn under ice. Her father had told her the scales did not weigh what a thing cost. They weighed what it owed. When Dunmore's fleece was reckoned, the pans leaned again, the other way, until the lead slid loose and rattled into the grass.
At dawn Dunmore walked down to the Hesketh cottage with two fleeces and a purse he had not wanted to open. Ada hung the scales back on the oak. The pans swung empty and bright, and the ribbons on the column caught the first sun.
