Dunphy had the ladder steady before I reached the second rung, which was his way of telling me he did not trust me on a height and did not trust himself either. "Mind the gulls," he said. "They've been sitting on the old gilt since Tuesday and have no respect for craftsmanship."

The board over the shut tearooms still read MARGERY ROSE in letters that had once been the colour of a good sovereign. Most of the gold had gone to salt and grey. The loops at the end of the R had worn to threads, and someone long ago had added a single fine stroke above the E, a diagonal like a raised eyebrow, which nobody could remember ordering. Dunphy said his wife had put it there when she painted the first sign herself, and that she had never once explained it.

I cleaned the old leaf back to bare wood with a rag and a sliver of pumice, working slowly because the sea wind kept lifting my hair into my eyes. The flourish on the final E took longest. I drew it twice on paper before I dared touch the board, following a line that had been laid down by a hand I would never meet. When I came to the accent, I felt Dunphy watching from the pavement below, not breathing.

By four the gilt had taken and the letters caught the low sun as though they had been lit from inside. Dunphy stood back with his cap in his hands and read the name aloud, slowly, the way you read a letter from someone far away. Then he said, "There she is," and went off to fetch the kettle from the shop, leaving the ladder propped against the wall.
