Ornate blue cannabis leaf with peacock feathers
Colour · Flash
The drawing shows a cannabis leaf shape built from dense paisley and damask scrollwork, with peacock feather eyes along the side leaflets and a dragonfly forming the lower stem. A fleur-de-lis and a pair of seahorse-like figures sit along the central vein. The design uses fine, detailed linework in a single saturated blue ink on a plain light grey background.

Hester had been on her knees on the chapel floor since first light, and the blue was drying faster than she could lay it down. Mr Pryce from the estate wanted the old tiles matched exactly, every scroll and fleur-de-lis where the damp had eaten them, but the kiln in Stoke had sent a box of replacements that were a shade too pale.

She sat back on her heels and studied the sample pinned to the sill, a leaf of paisley and feathered eyes that some grandmother had drawn in pencil and inked over years ago. Above her the roof was open to a grey sky, and jackdaws came and went through the window tracery as though they owned the place. The castle had been a ruin for two hundred years. Nobody had told the swallows.
Her apprentice, Tomasz, who talked too much, brought her tea in a chipped mug and said the seahorses looked like they were arguing. She had not noticed until he said it. Two of them faced each other above the central vein, tails curled around the same stem, and she had painted them that way for a week without once asking why.
On the last afternoon a dragonfly came in off the moor and settled on the wet ink at the base of the stem, its wings the exact colour of the glaze. Tomasz reached for it. Hester stopped his hand. She let the insect sit until the ink dried around its legs, then painted the rest of the stem carefully around it. Mr Pryce would get his match. He would never notice the one thing in the chapel that had chosen to stay.
