Small leaf wreath on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small wreath made of paired leaves in dark ink curves around an open circle, with a short line crossing at the top to suggest a tie. The linework is thin and even, with the leaves shaded in solid dark tone and no colour. The wrist is shown in soft focus against a blurred beige and black background, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

The string was the hard part. Everyone on Carrick knew the wreaths were easy: you stripped bay from the bush behind the chapel and bound the stems into a ring while they were still green and bendy. Grandad made them for every wedding and every drowning, and he never once let me tie the knot.

This time the wreath was for Mairi Lowe, who had swum the sound at sixteen and was off to Glasgow on Monday's boat. I bound the ring with my back to the harbour so he couldn't see the mess. The leaves kept springing loose, pale undersides flashing like fish, and twice I pricked a finger on a stem and sucked it while he pretended to read the tide tables.
When the ring was done he turned it once in his big hands, then pulled a short length of twine from his pocket and tied it across the top in a single loop that held everything together. 'That's the bit that keeps it,' he said. 'The rest is just leaves.'
I hung it on the post by the ferry slip. Mairi came down at nine with her bag over one shoulder, stopped, and touched the twine with one finger before she stepped aboard. I still don't know whether she meant to take it with her. It was still there when the boat turned, a small dark ring against the white railings, and I watched it until the wind carried the engine away.
