Ornate elephant head on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A red ink tattoo of an elephant head, seen from the front, with tusks and trunk visible. The fine linework fills the head and trunk with mandala-like patterns, dots and swirls. The design sits centrally on a pale inner forearm against a textured wooden background.

You have kept the lost property cupboard at Carrow Halt for nineteen years, long enough to know that nobody comes back for an umbrella, and that a battered tin box with a red elephant on its lid is either claimed within the week or never. This one has sat on the top shelf since March. Its lid is covered in fine red pattern, rings inside rings, dots like seed pearls, and the elephant looks out with its tusks lifted like the handles of a question you have never quite finished asking.

On a wet Tuesday in October a woman stands at the counter holding a paper ticket for the 4.12 and says she left something on it. You ask her to describe the item. She doesn't describe it. She says, "The elephant," and you already have the cupboard key in your hand. When she takes the box from you she holds it the way people hold a sleeping cat, with the lid turned towards her chest so the pattern can't catch the light. She tells you a man called Owen painted it at a kitchen table in Lancaster, one dot at a time, with a sable brush and poster paint he kept in a jam jar, and that he swore the trunk and tusks were meant to face whoever opened it.

You write her name in the ledger and the date beside it, and you almost tell her the box was never locked in the first place. Instead you watch her walk back out under the canopy, the rain loosening the last of the platform lamps, the red lid tucked under her arm like something she intends to carry all the way home. The 4.12 pulls out empty of her. You close the ledger, find the cupboard key still warm in your palm, and leave the shelf bare for the first time since March.
