Tomas had been told the elephant was bad luck on a boat, that nothing with a trunk should be carried over water. He said so to Ada Pike on the quay at Skelder while she unrolled a sheet of drawing paper across a bollard, weighting the corners with shackles.

The Marigold had carried an elephant on her wheelhouse door for forty years, and the paint had flaked to the colour of wet slate. Ada wanted it redrawn from her grandmother's notebook, the one full of henna patterns: dots running in rings down the forehead, flowers opening out of the ears like lamps. She drew the head in fine black ink with a sharpened pen, then switched to red for the lace of blossoms that would spill beneath it, the sort of thing salt air would eat in a single season.
The skipper, Hal Veness, came down on the Friday tide with his gloves still stiff from the winch. He studied the sheet for a long time. "Where's the fish?" he asked. Ada said the fish were in the water already, and the elephant was for the people who came back. He grunted, took the pen from her, and added one small dot under the trunk where the red lace began, the way a mender signs off a net.
On the Monday the Marigold cleared the breakwater with her new door freshly lacquered, and the dots caught the early light. Three days later she came in low in the water, and Hal rapped the door with his knuckles as he stepped onto the quay. He said nothing, which from him was the same as thanks.
