Elephant with watercolour splashes on upper back
Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo
A realistic grey elephant faces the viewer, with its tusks, trunk and eyes shaded in detail, centred on the upper back. Loose blue, teal and pink watercolour-style splashes surround it, with dark ink lines trailing outwards and a small flock of birds rising above its head. The photograph is taken from behind, with the subject's face not shown and the tattoo filling most of the frame.

Dear Ruth,

You will think me soft in the head, but I have finished the elephant. Mrs Pargeter let me have the back wall of the scullery, the one facing the harbour that goes green every winter, and I spent three weeks on a ladder with a bucket of thinned blue and a stub of charcoal. She wanted something for the dining room that would make the lodgers stop talking over their kippers. I gave her an elephant instead, the old bull who used to stand by the fairground in Weymouth when we were girls, the one with the cracked ear and the patient face.
The difficult part was the washes. The sea air keeps everything damp, so the teal bled into the pink before I was ready, and twice I had to scrub back to the plaster and begin again. Mr Okonedo from number six came down one evening and said the splashes looked like a storm that had been told to keep its distance, which I took as praise. I let the ink lines trail out from the edges where the paint ran dry, like roots pulling the whole thing loose from the wall.
The birds were an accident. I meant to leave the sky clean, but on the last morning a flock of swifts came low over the harbour and I had to paint them before they moved on, a dozen quick flicks of the brush. Mrs Pargeter says they nest under her eaves and she has never once seen them land, which is probably why nobody thought to ask me what I was doing up there.
I painted the eyes today, after the lodgers had gone out to the front. I wanted the elephant to look at whoever came through the scullery door, and now it does. Come at Easter and see it. Bring the good scissors, the back door sticks.
Yours, Pearl
