Ornate floral mandala on upper back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with a black bob, seen from behind in a peach open-back dress, shows a large symmetrical floral mandala on her upper back. The design uses fine black linework with dense detail and grey shading, and her arm carries further tattoos. Other guests in blue lace and white dresses are softly out of focus in an outdoor setting.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Pearl Tremayne had been pricking the same rosette for three evenings, and each time the pins came out crooked. Her aunt Ada, who had taught her bobbin lace in the back room above the Honiton shop, said the trouble was that she started from the edge. You began at the heart, Ada said, and let the petals grow outward the way a bramble grows from a root, or you would spend your life chasing your own tail.

So Pearl started again with a single pin in the centre of the parchment and a drop of candle wax to hold the thread. Her fingers moved the bobbins in the old order, cross, twist, cross, and the rosette bloomed in a ring of six, then twelve, then twenty-four, each arm answering the one across from it until the whole thing held its breath in perfect balance. Outside, a cart went down the lane, and the lamp on the sill guttered.
By the time the church clock struck two, the pattern was finished, and it was not the bridal veil she had been commissioned to make. It was a mandala of tiny sunflowers and seed heads, mirrored top to bottom, with a border of lilies that Ada would have called showy. Pearl understood then that she had not been copying anything. The design had been waiting under the centre pin all along.
She cut the thread at dawn and laid the piece on the bench to dry. When Ada came down, she looked at it for a long time, then tapped the lace twice with one knuckle. "Now you've started from the heart," she said, and went to put the kettle on.
