Libra and chakra symbols down a back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
The back of a person with a Libra scale symbol at the nape of the neck and a vertical row of four or so black symbols down the spine, resembling chakra and Sanskrit motifs. The linework is simple and bold with solid black ink and no shading. The design is centred on the spine, framed by thin white halter straps against tanned skin.

The barley sack knocks against your hip as you climb the stile below Wendle, and the first mark is already waiting on the beech by the gate. It is a ring of petals cut into the bark, its centre gouged dark where the knife went deepest, and the lichen has crept into the grooves the way it does on the old boundary stones.

Three more follow the path into Hollin Wood, each set higher than the last, until the trees thin around a clearing where Bailiff Edith Parr keeps her scale. It hangs from a rowan limb on a chain of black iron links, two copper pans turning slowly in the still air. She does not look up from her knitting. 'Grain is the easy part,' she says. 'Put it on the left.'
You heave the sack onto the pan and the chain groans, the right pan rising high above your head. Edith holds out a palm. You stare at it for a long time before you understand she wants the pebble from the stile, the grey one you pocketed without a reason. You give it to her. She drops it into the empty pan and the beam swings level with a click like a latch.
'That was never about barley,' she says, already threading her needle. 'Go home. Your weight is yours to carry now, and it sits just right.' You walk back through the marks, lower to higher, and at the stile you find you have stopped counting them.
