The frame came with the flat, the way the damp did. It hangs over the bread bin in the kitchen, an ornate thing with curled corners, painted the colour of weak tea, and there is nothing in the middle of it but the wallpaper, a yellow stripe gone grey where the sun gets in. Mr Okonedo from downstairs says the last tenant left it there on purpose. He said she used to swear it was a window onto somebody else's lounge.

I have been trying to decide what should go in it. I thought of Dad, but he would look like he was about to ask for the bill. I thought of the sea at Hastings, but the sea is too big for that frame and would only sulk. Yesterday I stood on a chair with my phone and photographed the view from the back step, the bins and the gull on the chimney, and then I didn't print it, because I realised I was framing it for the wrong reasons, which is exactly what you would tell me.

Last night the street lights went off at eleven and I could see the frame better in the dark, the scrolls catching the orange from the lamp outside. I missed your voice most, so I rang you and let it ring out, then left the phone face up on the table and talked to the empty middle of the frame for a while. It was easier than I expected.

I'm sending you the key. Come on Saturday and bring whatever you think belongs in it. Anything small. Anything you were going to throw away.
