Ornate framed portrait on thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a face set inside an ornate oval frame with scrolled, baroque detailing sits on the upper thigh. The face is rendered with smooth shading and soft highlights, and a second ornate frame is partly visible at the lower left edge. The skin is pale and the background shows a striped fabric.

Mrs Okafor's commission came in wrapped in a dust sheet and smelling of camphor, and Tobias was told not to open it until Thursday. He opened it on Tuesday anyway. The frame was a deep oval of carved lime wood, scrolled at every corner like a pair of unrolled ferns, and the gilt had worn to bare bronze along the crest where a thumb had rested for a hundred years. Inside was a portrait of a woman in a high collar, painted in greys, and she was looking past his left shoulder at the door.

He spent three evenings consolidating the surface and matching the lost leaf. On the third night the lamp hummed, and when he lifted his loupe the woman's eyes had moved a fraction toward the bench. He told himself it was the varnish, the way old glaze bends the light. He wrote it down anyway, the way his master had taught him to record anything strange in a piece before it went back out.
On Thursday Mrs Okafor came in, looked at the frame for a long time, and asked him to leave the portrait as it was, face turned to the window. Then she told him the woman was her grandmother's sister, who had gone to sea at seventeen and never written again. The painter had worked from a letter that said she was looking forward to coming home. Tobias handed the frame back across the counter and said nothing about the eyes.
As she carried it out to the car, he noticed that the scrolls on the lower corner had been regilded in fresh leaf, bright as a new coin, though he had not touched them.
