Lotus mandala on a thigh

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large lotus flower built from layered petals, leaves and a teardrop centre, surrounded by a geometric mandala of dotted arcs and hanging drop shapes. The design uses fine linework for the outlines and stippled dotwork for the shading and petal fills. It is shown in black and grey on the outer thigh, with the tattoo filling most of the frame against a wooden wall.

The ferry was already sounding its horn when Isla Brannoch pressed the last bead onto the fringe, a black glass drop no bigger than a lentil, and bit the thread free. Ninety-one drops hung from the hem. She had counted them twice on the kitchen table, once for each Sunday since her mother's chest had turned, and once more because counting steadied her hands.

The pattern had come off a scrap of paper a sailor left behind at the harbour inn: a lotus drawn in ink, its petals built one inside the next like the rings of a tree, and round it a circle of dots that someone had pricked with a needle rather than drawn. Isla spent a whole winter learning to make the dots the same size. Stippling, the sailor had called it, as if it were a trade with a name. She had laughed, because on Hallan nothing had a name until it was useful.

Her mother's shawl had always hung on the peg by the door. Now it was going to the mainland with Ruth Mackay, who was marrying a schoolteacher in Oban and had asked for something that would look like a flower opening in the rain. Isla folded the lotus face down so the drops lay in a straight line, the way they would fall once the shawl was worn and the wind came off the water.

On the quay the gulls were squabbling over a dropped crust. Ruth waved from the rail, and Isla watched the grey light catch the fringe, every bead in its place, each one hanging only as far as it needed to and no further.
