Triforce and red flower on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

Three golden triangles form a triangular emblem at the centre, with shading in orange and a grey-toned gap between them. Below and to either side sit teal leaves, a large red flower with white dots at its centre, and dark green foliage, all outlined in bold black and purple. The bright, saturated palette is set against smooth skin, with the design centred on the outer thigh.

Dearest Ada,

The snow has closed the pass now, so there is nothing for it but to sit by the kitchen range and tell you the news. Father has been wrestling the cellar door since Tuesday, and the lamp over the stairs has begun to smoke. Mrs Pryce says it wants a new wick, but I think it really wants you home to fuss over it.

Last night a man came in out of the white with a satchel and no hat. He asked for a room and paid with three gold pieces stamped with little triangles, each pointing the same way as the one on our old sign. Father bit one and laughed until he coughed. The man only smiled and said the road had told him to stop here. He ate two bowls of barley broth and asked after the red poppies that used to climb the south wall. I told him they came back every June, and he looked so relieved I nearly cried.

This morning the snow stopped for an hour and I found him at the gate, crouched over the frozen bed where the poppies sleep. He had his hand flat on the earth, and when he stood there were three gold triangles pressed into the frost where his fingers had been, shining like the coins. Then the cloud came over and they were gone.

He left before dawn, and the lamp over the stairs burned clear for the first time all winter. Beside my cup there is a single poppy petal, pressed flat in the margin of this letter. Keep the wick, love, and write soon.

Your sister, Nell
