Ornate keyblade with heart and bow

Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows a keyblade with a bow at the top, a tassel-like collar and a long tapering blade at the bottom. The round guard contains a solid black heart framed by curved, interlocking openwork lines. The design uses smooth outlines with grey shading on the metal and bow, and a plain white background.

The padlock on the cold store had been rusted shut since before my mother was born, so when Grandad said the key was somewhere in the long grass under the Bramley trees, I laughed at him and went looking anyway. It was the last week of August and the wasps were drunk on windfalls. I kicked through the nettles along the bottom row until my shin stung, and then my boot knocked against something that rang.

It was not a key I would have known. The bow at the top had gone dull and green at the loops, and the shaft was long and thin as a bradawl, ending in a point that could have pinned a sheet of paper to a board. In the round guard, someone had left a heart standing in the iron, with curved bars looping around it like the ribs of a basket. Grandad had written nothing on it, but there was a small hole in the ring where a string had once hung.

The lock gave on the first turn, which I think annoyed him more than the wasps did. Inside, the cold store smelled of wet stone and old cider, and on the shelf where the Cox's used to sit was a biscuit tin with my grandmother's name on the lid. Letters, forty or more, all addressed to him in her round hand, every one postmarked from the village office that closed in 1974. He had kept them all and never once mentioned them.

I carried the tin out into the sun and found him sitting on the gate with his cap pushed back. "You found the key, then," he said, not looking at the tin. I hung the iron key on the latch where the wasps could not reach it and said nothing, and for once he did not need me to.
