The last tram had gone without you, so you walked the length of Foundry Lane with the rain easing off and your locksmith's roll pressed flat against your ribs. Halfway down, the shutter of Abernethy's pawn shop was still up, one bulb burning over a tray of watches, and Mr Abernethy stood in the doorway as though he had been expecting you since dusk.

He held out a box no bigger than a hand. Walnut, rubbed pale at the corners, with a brass keyhole set in the lid, its plate cut in the shape of a small crown. 'Came in with a dead man's effects,' he said. 'The widow says he wore the key on a cord and never once let it out of his sight.' You turned the box over. On the underside someone had scratched two spirals, one winding inward from each side, joined at the bottom by a long curling tail, like a heart that had forgotten how to finish its own shape.
You worked the lock for an hour under his bulb, first with the thin picks, then with the wire, and it would not give. Its tumblers were scrolls rather than teeth, and each time you thought you had one, it slid back into the dark. At three in the morning you sat back on your heels and laughed, because the answer had been in your own pocket all along: the small brass key you had carried since your first apprenticeship, hooked on a cord you never let out of your sight.
You turned it once. The lid lifted without a sound. Inside, folded in tissue, lay a second key, blackened with age, its bow shaped like a heart with a long curled tail. Mr Abernethy let out a breath. 'Well,' he said. 'Now we know who the house belongs to.' You closed your fist around it and felt the tail bite into your palm, heavy and patient, as if it had decided to stay.
