Winged heart with star and bell design
Mixed · Flash
A digital drawing of a heart-shaped frame with white and green wings, a dark five-pointed star and a bell-shaped figure with a small heart and bow. Sparkles and small stars surround the motif. Bold black outlines and simple shading give it a cartoon-like, graphic look on a white background.

Nobody in Pell Harbour had rung the bell of St Ysolde's since the winter the tide took the east wall of the tower, so when Mrs Oddny Carrow climbed the ladder with a tin of green paint and a bread knife, the boys on the quay assumed she had lost her wits. She scraped the verdigris from the bronze lip until it shone like a new sixpence, painted a small heart on the leather of the clapper, and tied a black bow to the rope where a sailor might tie his lucky ribbon.

"Why a heart?" asked her grandson Tobias, passing up the paint pot with a sticky thumb. "So it knows which boats are ours," she said, and pinned a dented tin star to the crown of spikes on the bell's shoulder. Tobias pointed out that the star was crooked. She said stars were allowed to be crooked, it was the sky that had to be straight.
That night the fog came in thick as wet wool and six boats were still beyond the Teeth. Oddny rang the bell by hand, and the note went out high and bright, sparkling over the water in a spray of little silver flecks that the fishermen swore they could see from the reef. One by one the lanterns came round the headland and crept into the harbour mouth.
At dawn the bell hung quiet and the paint had worn thin along the rope. Tobias found green smudges on his palms, the colour of a heart seen through old glass, and he did not wash them off for a week.
