Ornate mandala spine tattoo on a back

Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A greyscale photograph of a person lying face down on a bed, showing a long vertical column of ornate motifs running down the spine. The stacked elements include mandala-like medallions, scrolls, teardrop shapes and layered flower heads, drawn with fine, detailed linework and fill. The soft black and white lighting and bed linen keep the focus on the pattern, which fills the length of the back above the patterned trousers.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pass between the two valleys had no gate, only a pillar of grey stone that the shepherds called the Stem. Someone had carved it in rings from base to crown: a flower, then a round medallion like a sun, a scroll curled as tight as a fern, a drop of water, and at the top a lattice that no two carvers ever agreed upon.

A clerk named Oswin Tallis was sent up from the lowland town to count the goats that crossed. He was a careful man who trusted only what he could write down. Each morning he sat at the foot of the Stem with his ledger and tallied travellers, and each morning he noticed that the rings had shifted by a finger's width, as though the stone were slowly growing.

On the thirteenth day a widow came down the path with a bundle of blue cloth and one thin goat, and asked him to let her pass into the upper valley where her sister lived. He told her the rule: a name for every crossing, written plain. She gave her name. Then, after a long silence, she laid her palm flat on the lowest ring and recited the names of the flowers her mother had grown on the south slope. The stone warmed under her hand. The lattice at the top turned like a lock, and Oswin wrote nothing down.

When he climbed home that winter, the ledger held one line he could not read, and the Stem had a new flower at its crown, small and open, with petals pressed into the grey as if by a thumb that had remembered the way.
