Ornate mandala tattoo across upper back

Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large ornamental design covers the upper back, built around a central mandala with concentric rings and a lace-like pattern. Below it, a smaller floral medallion and further scrollwork extend down the spine. The linework is fine and dense, with small dots and solid black areas creating depth, and the design appears to be in black ink only. The subject is photographed from behind against a dark background, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

Dear Ada,

The lace house gave me the night frame on Thursday, which means I sit with the lamp hung low and the bobbins clacking until the bell for the early shift, and Mrs Pell says it is an honour for a girl of nineteen. I have been working the pattern you asked about, the one Mother kept folded in the back of her hymn book. I thought it was only a rosette at first, eight petals ringed by smaller ones, but when I pinned the paper to the board and turned it to the lamp, the spiral runs out from the centre like the rings off a dropped stone, and at the bottom edge there is a stalk of paisley curls that points straight down like a finger.

I unpicked three inches on Friday because the tension was wrong, and while I was doing it the foreman's boy came round with the wages sheet and stopped to watch. He said the pattern was not a rose at all but a plan of the sluice gate at Trent Bridge, drawn from above, and that Mother had once worked the stalk down to the water. I laughed at him. Then I found a faint pencil note on the back of the paper in her hand, which says only "for when the water comes up", and I have not laughed since.

So I am making the christening lace for the Harcourt baby with the rosette at the centre, as commissioned, but I have left a gap in the stalk where a ribbon can be threaded through, and I am sending this letter with a length of the spare mesh folded inside. Keep it somewhere dry. If the river rises again, go up to the Pell cottages on the hill and wait for me there, and do not come down for the bells.

Yours always, Lily
