Ornate mandala tattoo on upper back
Dotwork · Back · Mixed · Photo
A woman wearing a light grey sleeveless top shows an ornate mandala-style design between her shoulder blades. The pale pink and white ink is outlined in black, with dotted borders and paisley-like curls radiating from a central motif. The background is softly blurred, which keeps the focus on the design.

The rain had been coming sideways off the estuary since dawn, and you were still shaking out the indigo cloth when Mr Okonedo's boy ran up the cobbles shouting that the awning on the fish stalls had gone. You left the cloth hanging from the rail and went, because your mother would have gone.

Under the stalls the water ran in brown ribbons between the flagstones. Someone had lit a paraffin heater, and its smell mixed with wet wool and bruised mint. You found the Okonedos' awning folded like a dropped sail against a stack of crates, the boy pointing at the pins as if you could fix them with a look. You could not. You knelt in the puddle and worked the wire loose with your fingers until your knuckles bled a little, and nobody thanked you, which was right.
When you got back, the block-printed shawls were soaked through. Your mother had carved the paisley blocks herself from pear wood, the curled teardrops with their dotted borders, and printed them in madder pink on cream cotton, leaving the white bare where the resist wax had been. The rain had lifted the pink in places. Pale petals of colour bled into the water on the rail and ran toward the drain.
You thought the whole morning was ruined. But when you lifted the nearest shawl, the black outline was still there, every dot and curl of it, sharp as the day it was cut. The pink had gone soft at the edges and run into the white, and what was left looked less like a pattern than a shape remembering itself. You hung it up to dry anyway, and you sold it that afternoon to a woman who said it looked like something from a temple roof. You did not tell her it was only rain.
