Metallic ornamental design on upper back
Back · Mixed · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind, showing an ornate symmetrical design on her upper back with a central floral or lotus-like motif, scrolling filigree and a small heart at the base. The lines are dark and outlined, with the fill appearing metallic silver and gold rather than conventional ink. The design sits centred between the shoulder blades, with a beaded collar at the neck and a blurred natural background.

The wire was the problem, not the design. Mr Halloran had drawn the lotus on the back of a tide table, and I could not get the petals to hold their curl. Silver sags when it is heated and gold will not stay where you tell it. For a month I drew the same spiral with a steel nib, and every morning it came out lopsided, like a man trying to stand on a deck.

He came in on a Thursday with his brother's dinghy hook in a paper bag and asked whether we could work the mark of the Ardnish boats into something to be worn beneath a dress, where nobody would see it but the one who mattered. I thought him soft. He said the men who went out from Ardnish came back most years because the wives kept a lamp burning, and the lamp was pierced metal that threw patterns across the kitchen wall. The heart at the bottom was his mother's, cut from an old spoon.
We worked it in pieces, fine as hair, soldered with a borax flux that stank of pennies. Gold for the fire-lines, silver for the scrolls, and a dark patina rubbed into the outlines so the shapes stood up like inked prints. When it was finished I laid it on a grey cloth, and it looked like something dredged from very deep water and polished by someone patient.
Mr Halloran never came back for it. The boats came in on the Sunday through a grey wind, and his brother brought the paper bag with the hook still inside. I posted the piece anyway, to the address written on the bag, with a note that said only, the lamp is lit. Months later a letter came with a photograph of a kitchen wall covered in small bright shadows. I keep it in the drawer with the nibs.
