Ornate owl head on shoulder

Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A frontal owl head fills the upper arm and shoulder, with wide, staring eyes and a hooked beak at the centre. The feathers and ruff are built from dense hatching, stippling and fine ornamental patterns, giving a strong tonal contrast. The tattoo is entirely black and grey, set against lightly toned skin in a close crop that cuts off the rest of the body.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit nearer the fire, the lot of you, and mind the dog. Now. Fen country, the year the bell-tower cracked. There was a scribe at Saint Odile's called Brother Ambrose, who could draw a bird so true it would blink at you from the page. Every night an owl came to the scriptorium window and sat on the sill, looking in at the candles with those great round eyes, as if it were counting the letters he made.

Ambrose grew proud of that owl. He painted it into the margin of the Psalter, all ruff and fan-feathers and little rings of ornament, a sun inside a feather inside a sun. The abbot came to look and went pale. The Psalter was promised to the bishop, and the bishop had asked for the gold leaf to be counted twice. Somebody had been shaving gold from the edges to sell in Lincoln. The owl, said Ambrose, had seen it done.

The abbot did not care to be watched, so he waited on the sill one dark night with a crossbow. When the bolt went out, the window held nothing but a single feather, black and grey and ruled into rings like a tally stick. The abbot picked it up. Every ring of it was a line of stolen gold, written out in a small clear hand, and by morning he was out on the fen looking for a ferryman who would take him far away. The owl, I am told, still sits on that sill. Now, who has the bread?
