Owl with spread wings on a chest

Realism · Chest · Mixed · Photo

A large owl with wide spread wings fills the upper chest, with its forward-facing eyes and feathers rendered in detail. The feathers use soft orange, yellow and grey shading with dark black accents, while sketchy splashes extend around the wing edges. Thin geometric lines and triangles sit beneath the owl on the lower chest.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The owl had been sitting on the hoarding above Corporation Drain for three nights before Tomasz Reid stopped pretending it was the rats keeping him company. It perched with its wings half open against the sodium glow, orange light running along the feathers as if someone had dragged a match down them, and its eyes never once went to the grate he was measuring. They went to him.

On the fourth night the rain came sideways off the river and he set his theodolite on the tripod with numb fingers, sighting the brass bench mark on the wall where the old survey line ran. His plan was a web of thin pencil lines and triangles that meant nothing to the council until someone dug. He wrote the bearings, rubbed out a figure, wrote it again. Above him the wings lifted, grey as wet slate, and something dropped from the gutter with a soft slap.

It was the owl's map, not his. Somebody in 1911 had charted this same underground stream and marked the lost culvert with a small triangle, and the bird had been working along that line for longer than the city had had names for its streets. Tomasz folded the drawing, tucked the rain-spotted paper inside his coat, and followed the owl's gaze to a dark opening under the arches where the water ran quiet and high.

When the crew came at dawn with their picks, he had already chalked the spot. The culvert gave onto a brick chamber as dry as a church, and in one corner lay a single feather, orange at the tip, the colour of the lamps going out. He pocketed it as if that were the correct thing to do, then walked home along the river while the owl, somewhere above him, began to call.
