Owl tattoo on upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a shaded tattoo of a large owl with two round, detailed eyes and feather tufts, sitting above a smaller owl enclosed in a looped ring shape. The linework is fine and the shading uses soft grey gradients with dark accents. The tattoo is centred on bare skin across the upper back, with the back of a person's neck and hair visible at the top of the frame.

The owl knocker on the Fenner house had hung there longer than anyone in Scarth could remember, and every spring the children rubbed its brass bright so it would ring. Old Mother Pell said the big owl was the one that counted the years, and the small one inside the ring was the one it had lost count of.

When the school reunion came round, the whole year group walked back up the lane in their good coats, and nobody wanted to be the first to knock. Tom Ashby, who had once cut the braid off Ellen Fenner's plait in the infants, lifted the ring and let it fall. The sound went down the valley and came back doubled.

Inside, the village hall smelt of floor polish and warm sausage rolls. They talked about who had gone to Leeds, who had gone under, and who had married the vicar's son. Nobody spoke of the owl. But at midnight, when the last of them stood on the step, a small grey owl sat on the porch rail watching them with eyes like coins, and it would not fly off until each of them had said their own name aloud.

Ellen was last. She said hers, and then, because it seemed right, she said the names of the ones who were not there. The big owl gave one knock of its own, the small one slipped back into the ring, and in the morning the brass was dull again, as if nobody had ever polished it.
