Owl tattoo on a shoulder blade
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small owl sits upright on a branch, shown front-on with its head turned slightly and wide, round eyes. The work uses fine stippled and hatched shading to build soft feather texture and depth. The image is greyscale, with the tattoo centred on the upper back beside a dark sleeveless top.

The owl arrived the week the new scanners went in, and it chose the dead ash beside Barrier Two as if someone had posted it there. Nobody issued it a pass. Dennis on days wanted it moved on with a broom, and Priya wanted a photograph for the staff noticeboard, but I told them both it had been here longer than the paperwork, so it could keep its branch.

On nights the lorries came in a slow grey line from the port, and drivers wound down their windows to tell me lies about their loads. The owl never looked at the cargo. It watched the drivers' hands on the wheel, then their faces, and when a story began to bend it turned its head, slowly, the way you glance at a clock you have already read. I started keeping a tally of those turns in the margin of my log. By March the margin was full.
The van came in at ten past three, no lights on the trailer, the driver asking the way to a village that had closed its school in 1987. I checked his papers twice. When I looked up the owl had dropped off the ash and was standing on the tarmac between us, feathers puffed and eyes wide as coins, not moving at all. The man said something under his breath and reversed without being asked.
By dawn the branch was bare and there was a single grey feather lying beside my stamped form, the one that says nothing to declare. I signed the margin, put the feather in my breast pocket, and waved the first commuter through with the face I had learned from the owl.
