Ornate owl with mandala on a calf
Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical owl with wide eyes and ornate feather patterns fills most of the frame, with a mandala-style rosette at its centre and a branch beneath its feet. The work uses fine dotted stippling and detailed linework to build shading across the body and wings. The image is in black and grey, with the calf placed centrally against a dark pavement background.

Now sit closer, you with the cold hands, because the fire is low and this part is for those who stay awake. In the kingdom of Varennel, which had seven gates and no proper map of itself, there lived an owl called Mother Ossory who kept the night accounts for the queen. She sat on the bridge-post above the salt market, and every coin that changed hands after dark passed beneath her wide yellow eyes before it reached a purse.

One autumn the queen sent for her. 'Show me the city,' she said, 'every well, every cellar, every door that opens onto the river.' Ossory fluffed her feathers, which took a long while, then pressed her breast against the queen's palm. Beneath the lace of her plumage was a rosette of rings, and at its heart a single round hollow, pale as a pearl. 'Read it,' said Ossory. The queen turned her hand and the rings bent into streets, the streets folded down into the water, and at the very centre she saw her own palace drawn small. She understood then that the owl had never counted the city for her at all.
The queen had the owl's eyes put out that winter, and the city learned nothing from it. The rings kept turning in the palace cellars, lost in their own patterns, and the streets in the drawing grew over with ivy and bare branch until no one could walk them.
They say that if you climb to the bridge-post on a still night, you will find a bird on a crooked branch, all ornament and patience, watching the water. Drop a coin in the river for her. She will count it, and she will not tell you where it came from.
