Ornate patterned hands on a textured blanket
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands with dark, densely detailed patterns covering the backs of the hands and fingers are pressed into a knitted, textured blanket. Spire-like motifs rise up towards the wrists, and the fine, repeating linework creates a dense, intricate effect. The image is entirely black and white, with a soft, low-contrast composition and the hands filling the upper half of the frame.

The pit at Holm Cragg took men down at five and sent them up at two, and the women of the row kept their kettles warm for whichever came home. Old Nan Ashworth knitted through every shift she was not at the wash-tub, and nobody in the row had seen her finish a thing that was not for the chapel or the dead.

The winter the seam flooded, she began a blanket of cream wool, worked in a pattern she called the steeples, tall points rising from the bottom edge the way the chapel spire rose over the slag heaps. Her son Tom was below with the pumps. She counted each stitch aloud, and when the wool ran short she unpicked the sleeves of his old jumper and kept going.
On the ninth night the whistle did not blow for the night shift, and the women gathered in the chapel with their hands in their laps. Nan did not go. She spread the blanket over the kitchen table, pressed her palms flat into its raised knots, and told the spires to stand firm until the men were up. Her granddaughter, who told this story at every wake after, said the table was warm by morning.
Tom walked up the lane at dawn with the lamp still lit in his cap. He said the cage had stuck at the third level and then, for no reason he could name, come free. Nan folded the blanket and put it away in the press. Nobody in Holm Cragg ever again asked her why every spire faced the same way.
