Peony outline tattoo on the thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two large peony flowers with layered petals and a centre detail, drawn in thin black outline with leaves branching between them. The linework is clean and unshaded, so the flowers read as open outlines on the skin. The photo is black and white and shows a bed and a phone in the background, with a hand resting near the tattoo.

Dad painted the gondolas every winter in a barn outside Ely, and he never once finished a flower. He would lay down the black outline of a peony, each petal curled over the one beneath it, then stop, wipe the brush on his trousers and say the colour could wait until the money came in. The money never came in. So the Waltzer went out each spring with its cars the colour of bone, and the peonies sat white inside their black lines like something promised and not delivered.

I held the lamp while he worked. I was fifteen that summer and thought the blank petals were the cleverest thing about him. You could see straight through them to the grey wood. He said a peony is mostly the space it keeps open for itself, and I didn't understand him until the autumn the fair folded and he sold the rides to a man in Lowestoft who wanted the cars for a film set.
The last car he painted was for me. Two peonies climbed the side panel with leaves branching between them, and when he finished the outline he sat back on his heels and said, there, that's you done. I asked him to colour just one. He laughed, shook his head and reached for the turps.
The car is in a field near Wisbech now, rain running off its roof. The flowers are still empty. I have stopped asking anyone to fill them in.
