Ornate skeleton keys around a filigree circle

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A pen drawing on paper shows four ornate skeleton keys radiating from a large circular filigree ornament with scrollwork and a rosette centre. The keys and ornament are outlined in solid black linework and filled with stippled dots that fade out into a scattered dotted halo around the design. The design is black and white only, and the paper is slightly angled in the photo.

You find the ring on the third day of the clearance, hooked behind a loose stone in the chapel wall where some mason's apprentice must have left it centuries ago. Four keys hang from a brass wheel pierced with scrolls, a rosette at its centre, and the bows are worn smooth where a thumb once rested. Mrs Ashcombe at the estate office says the castle has no doors left to lock, only the tower arch and a cellar hatch, so you pocket the ring and climb down to the mud where the survey stakes stand.

The first key fits nothing. The second turns in the cellar hatch, though the hatch was welded shut before your grandmother was born, and beneath it a stair you did not know existed goes down into dry air that smells of lavender and iron. The third key opens the gate of the sheep pen, and the gate swings onto a field that is not the field you walked across at noon. The sheep stand in neat rows like stitches. The fourth key stays cold in your palm, and you know it is waiting for something you have not yet seen.

You climb back to the top of the keep with it, where the wind takes your breath and the sea shows grey beyond the broken walls. There, set into the parapet, is the last lock still standing: a small iron box with a keyhole shaped like a flower. The key goes in and turns with a sound like someone clearing their throat. The box holds nothing but a second brass ring, identical to yours, hung on a hook as though it has been waiting for a new keeper to arrive.
